The Inheritance
Every page of this site ends the same way: Great Breads Clothing, LLC. People ask why a studio that builds operating systems still carries the word Clothing. The answer is the most important thing about this company.
2016
Great Breads began in Harlem in 2006, a clothing line dreamed up by a fourteen-year-old. For ten years it stayed what most young dreams stay: real to the person carrying it, invisible to everyone else.
In 2016, my grandmother purchased the LLC. She was putting a legal foundation under a dream that had none. Six months later, she passed.
She bought a future she knew she would not see. That is the entire philosophy of this studio in a single act. You build the system before the results arrive, because someone you love is going to stand on it.
So we never changed the name. Her purchase is the founding document of everything we make. When you hire this studio, you are hiring a company a grandmother decided was worth securing.
The library
A year before that, I had come up from Harlem to Hudson Valley Community College and lost my housing partway through. I called my mother ready to pack up and come home. She said, "No, you're not; not without a degree."
So I lived out of my car, parked near the campus library that never closed. When it got too cold I went inside and studied. That same semester I made the President's List. The next, the Dean's List, while working two jobs and carrying a full course load. News10 told the story in May 2017, the spring Morehouse said yes.
I told that reporter something I did not fully understand yet: "We call it the grind, but I guess another term would be tenacity." What I was actually describing was a system. A place to sleep. A library that never closed. A schedule that survived the cold. There were no secrets in that parking lot. There were only systems.
What this means for you
The tagline on this site is not marketing. It is autobiography. Everything we build for a client, every brand, every website, every operating system, is built the way her purchase taught us: deliberately, ahead of need, made to outlive the moment it was made in.
Brands should be built like furniture. Slowly. Deliberately. To last.
