How This Works
How to work with a certified MBE design and technology studio.
Most supplier-diversity conversations stall in the same place. The certification checks out, the capability statement gets filed, and then nobody is quite sure what to actually buy or how to route it. What follows is the part that usually goes unwritten: what the certification means, how the spend gets counted, what onboarding takes, and what belongs in the scope.
What the certification actually certifies
NMSDC certifies businesses that are at least 51 percent owned, operated and controlled by one or more minority group members who are United States citizens. Certification is granted through a regional affiliate council after documentation review and an interview or site visit, and it is renewed annually. It is not a self-declaration a company can grant itself, and it is not a logo you take on faith: certified suppliers are listed in NMSDC Central, where any corporate member can confirm status directly.
It is worth being equally clear about what certification is not. It is not a price concession, a quality rating, or a promise that a set-aside exists. It states who owns and controls the company. Everything after that is the work, which is why this page also carries the capability statement, the codes, and the case studies.
Great Breads Studio is an NMSDC Certified MBE, minority-owned and Black-owned, registered and active on SAM.gov under UEI J2JXA434NS13 and CAGE 1Z8P1, and registered as a vendor with the New York State Comptroller. New York State MBE and New York City M/WBE applications are in process. When they are granted, this page will say so; until then it will not.
How the spend gets counted: Tier 1 and Tier 2
Corporate programs count diverse spend two ways. Tier 1 is spend paid directly to the certified supplier under a contract your company holds. Tier 2 is diverse spend a prime contractor reports through the subcontractors it uses on your work, credited back through the prime’s own reporting.
The studio works either way. Contracted directly by a brand, marketing, IT or procurement organization, that is Tier 1. Engaged by an agency of record, a systems integrator, a general contractor or another prime already holding the master agreement, that is Tier 2. Name which one you need in the first email. It changes the paperwork and the reporting path, not the work and not the team.
Onboarding, in five steps
- 01 · Verify us first. NMSDC Central for certification status, SAM.gov for UEI J2JXA434NS13 and CAGE 1Z8P1. Two minutes, no email required, and it is the right order: verification before the introductory call, not after it.
- 02 · Scope the work, not the category. A thirty-minute call on what the business actually needs. The procurement system asks for a category code; the useful conversation is the one about the outcome, and the code follows from it.
- 03 · Paper. W-9, certificate of insurance, NMSDC certificate and references, sent directly to procurement on request. Master service agreement and NDA on your paper or ours.
- 04 · Vendor record. Supplier setup in your procure-to-pay or ERP system under the codes that match the work: 541511 Custom Computer Programming Services, 541613 Marketing Consulting Services, 541430 Graphic Design Services, 541810 Advertising Agencies, 315210 Cut and Sew Apparel Contractors.
- 05 · Deliver, invoice, report. Work is invoiced under a single vendor record, so the spend lands somewhere your diversity reporting can see it, on whatever quarterly or annual cycle your program runs.
What belongs in the scope
Five categories are already built and already sold, and they can sit on one purchase order under one vendor record. That is the practical argument for a single certified supplier: the diversity spend is not split across five vendors, and neither is the accountability.

- Is there a minimum engagement size?
- There is no minimum for branded merchandise or production runs. Design and platform engagements are scoped to the work: brand identity engagements begin at $40,000 and typically run $40,000 to $60,000 for a full ninety-day build, with figures published openly on the FAQ rather than quoted on request.
- How quickly can you be onboarded and start?
- Documents go out the same business day they are requested, and inquiries through this page are answered within one business day. How fast the vendor record itself opens is a function of your procurement system, not this studio’s, so no promise is made about it here.
